Perspective in the Present Moment
“When we get swept away by the current of life,
we lose perspective.
While mindfulness does not necessarily change
what is happening,
it changes our relationship to
what is happening.”
~Dr. Shauna Shapiro, PhD.
I sincerely hope that this finds you all staying healthy, safe, and sane. I recognize that the term “unprecedented” has become second nature conversation as we collectively navigate this terrain, and I do want to acknowledge the massive upheaval that we are all experiencing on varying levels.
I believe that the opportunities for healing and growth abound in midst of the chaos and destruction of the familiar and life as we have known it.
This is a highly sensitive time with vast impact. In no way will I ever negate the seriousness of the spread of this virus and its effects on our lives. I intend to continue to share wisdom, insight, and inspiration with you in hopes that it will be resonant and supportive while we move through these times.
On a personal level, I will share with you all that my own Mom tested positive for Covid several weeks ago. My Dad was also sick with a mild case and it was touch and go for our family for a few weeks.
I am so happy to report that they are both well! My Mom, who was sick for a solid 3 weeks has finally found herself upright and strolling outside (masked of course!) in these past few days. I feel the density on my own life ripple through on many levels. I am re-enlivened and re-committed to my own practices with a new flavor so as to meet all that is alive.
We are nearly a month into this apocalyptic phenomenon here in our sphere, and everyday seems to bring a new opportunity to surrender and open. As we settle more deeply, layer-by-layer, into some semblance of a groove within the parameters of our new reality and its unending fluctuations, cultivating a mindfulness practice will keep us steady and awake as the storms arrive.
Through mindfulness practice we are able to anchor ourselves into the present moment. From there, we are able to remain connected to that unwavering inner strength and resource through our bodies.
When we bring ourselves into the present moment we provide the opportunity for perspective and choice. We can remember the gift that this life is in the present. We can choose to appreciate the blessings that we have in our lives.
Right now.
In this exact moment.
From that place, we are able to meet the unfolding and uncertainty from a place of ground and presence.
Gaining perspective in the present moment does not mean that we are in denial of the magnitude of what is unfolding. It is actually the complete opposite. It is about meeting the present moment with the whole of us and then choosing how we are going to respond.
There are certainly many reasons to choose to contract and concede to this unfolding. I get it completely. The invitation here is to resource ourselves into the present moment and make a choice from this place rather than in reaction to the outer circumstances.
Not easy work especially when the pile of dishes is looming for the 15th time that day, the children are begging incessantly for screen, the walls of our home seem to be closing in, and the unknown as to when this time will be interrupted is prevalent….yet, so incredibly powerful to do.
We are being asked to drop deeper down into our own homes, our bodies, and with our loved ones and communities. We are healing ourselves from the inside out and connecting on a new plane with those in our lives.
The magic of this time is also alive despite the trauma of lives being lost, sickness, the financial crisis so many are in, and the uncertainty as to how and when we will emerge.
So many whom I have encountered are landing in a place of gratitude and appreciation for the blessings in their lives and this rare opportunity to slow everything down, reassess, and reconnect to their own bodies, hearts, families, dreams, and visions for the future.
A rare Springtime rebirthing experience no doubt!
As we continue to dance through this time….please open your eyes and ears to the beauty all around, the trees budding, the flowers beginning to bloom, the birds singing….the life that is still very much alive and well around us.
Breathe in the present moment and the medicine that is abound in the simplicity of that alone.
No, this is not at all what any of us could have imagined in our wildest dreams, yet it is happening and by bringing ourselves into the present, resourcing, opening, and connecting to ourselves and each other, there are endless possibilities to tap into the gift that this life is.
Remember that you are not alone.
You can start over as many times a day as you need to.
Moment-by-moment.
Day-by-day.
We are in this together.
Please reach out if you are in need of connection. I am here in service and support.
